19TH National Sport Festival : Lagos State yet to reward Medalists

296

16th December will be a year since the Nineteen National Sport Festival but what time cannot erase is  that Lagos State, the hub of Sports in Africa is yet to reward their Athletes for bringing honour to the state .

The State , who came fourth with a total of 146 medals and  a breakdown of 36 gold ,37 silver and 73 bronze medal , might be losing their Athletes to other states as a result of poor welfare  structure.

Moreso , Athletes who won medals for the state are conceiving the idea of representing other states at the next Sport Festival .

In contrast  ,  Delta state ,  who made a promise of 1,000,000 naira to Gold medalists , 500,000 and 250,000 thousand naira to Silver and Bronze medalists respectively has fulfilled their obligation  few weeks after the 16th of December 2018 .

What is more striking  to the athletes is the attitude of the Sport Commission towards their plight . Statements like “ it is a privilege and not the rights of the Athlete to be awarded “ might lead the athletes to consider a protest as an option if the issue is not resolved  .

In May , few days before the end of  Akinwunmmi Ambode ‘s tenure ,  Contract coaches of the Commission organized a protest at the Telsim Balogun Stadium demanding the former Governor to pay their one year outstanding salaries before he vacates office .

Today , 25 . The  Lagos State Athletes’ Representative Committee will be having a meeting with the State’s Sports Commission to resolve the issue of non-payment to the athletes .

Regardless to the resolution of the meeting , it has been confirmed that some top athletes of the state will fly the colours of other states in Edo 2020 .
