Most Chairmen and board members of Sports Associations in Nigeria have been in power for almost a decade without a succession plan and their appointment is solely political and more often, it is based on friendship or business associate of those who dictate the power control in the state.

While in Lagos state, where I reside, the appointment of the leadership position of sports association is based on appointees’ passionate interest in sports and past contribution to sports development in the state.

Even though there is no concrete evidence to prove in some instance.

The announcement made on Friday by the Special Assistant on Media to the Kaduna State Sports Commissioner, Ismaila Lere, arouse the need to revamp the constitution that governs states sports associations’ framework and guidelines in the country since they are closer to our sport men and women.

In line with the vision of Kaduna State Sports Commissioner, Prof Kabir Mafo ,  to dissolve the 36 state sports association in the state and pave way to bring back the glory of sports through the process of election in the sports association .

It is therefore needful to put a criteria for those seeking election and re-election in the association because whoever emerges after the election is directly responsible to  bring back the glory of Sports in the state .

In the spirit of fair play, which is the hallmark of Sports, I would admonish the Kaduna State Ministry of Sports to take some guidelines from the 2017 Lagos State Sports Commission Law in the process of their forth coming election in the 36 sports associations in the state.

1 . Any association chairman, who has served for the immediate past two consecutive terms, or more shall not be eligible to serve as chairman of the same sports association.

2 . Any sports association chairman, who is currently the president or vice president of any National Sports Federation shall not be eligible to serve as chairman of the proposed state association board but can be a member, if he/she is selected.

3 .  Each of the sports associations will have a Media Spokesperson attached to it to be nominated by the Kaduna State Chapter of the Sports Writer’s Association of Nigeria .

4 . The Sports Association should appoint their Technical Directors , which should be headed by one of their Board member .

5 . Each Association shall at least have one female member on their board.

In the Last National Sports held in Abuja , Kaduna State finished 20th with 4 Gold , 7 Silver and 8 Bronze .
