Nigeria Football community was thrown into mourning when the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and assistant coach, Joe Erico, was announced on Thursday morning.

 

According to the wife of the late footballer, Mosunmola Eric, said she found her husband dead when she tried to wake him up on Thursday morning.

 

“He was ill for about three days and we took him to the hospital, he complained of body pain. He was okay and we came back home. But just yesterday (Wednesday) night, he started feeling somehow and he later slept. I tried to wake him up this morning but he was stone dead,” Mosunmola said.

48 years ago, a young Erico made a wining debut for then Green Eagles, now Super Eagles, in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Zambia in Lagos in July 1973 (Nigeria won 3-2)

 

In preparatory for the World Cup in 2002, Joe Erico, popularly known as ‘Jogo Bonito’ (Beautiful Game) alongside Amodu Shaibu and Stephen Keshi, (all dead) became the first indigenous coaches to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup in 2002

 

The former shot-stopper died aged 71.
