For the past six months Lagos State Sports Commission is yet to pay some of their Athletes, who are on the twenty thousand a month grants for self-development and welfare.
Just few days ago, Athletes confirmed two months payment of the arrears even though some are yet to receive payment as the time of filing the report.
Reports also confirms that rewards and honors promised to the Athletes for the 2018 National Sport Festival and 2019 National Youth Games is yet to be fulfilled.
The Commission’s financial indebtedness to their Athletes has become a recurrent expenditure on their financial budget as rewards and benefits dating back to over two years promised to Athletes and Coaches is yet to be fulfilled.
Few months ago, in agitation for the poor welfarism and reward system of the Commission, the entrance of the Telsim Balogun Stadium, which is the administrative hub of the Commission was locked during one of the frequent protest of coaches and Athletes as a result of non-payment of financial entitlement and benefits.
In recent times , proposed peaceful protest by the Athletes has been rescheduled severally due to the appeal and promise made to the Athletes but as usual most of promises are left unfulfilled.
According to some of the Athletes, the Commission has given several inhuman reasons for the delays, denials and postponement of their benefits, which oftentimes leads the Athletes to switch allegiance.
Though Lagos State Sports Commission has always boasted itself as the breeding ground for most Athletes in the Country, this is more because of the importance of the City to Nigerians rather than the Commission’s grassroot development project
Secondly, though there is a huge decay in Sports facilities in the state , most Athletes have no better option .
If the continued insensitivity to Athletes continues, the self-acclaimed Hub of Sports in West Africa might just be a hub to herself .
