One of the best left wingers that has ever worn the Green and White Jersey and one that made the role of the left winger sought after in the National team , Felix Owolabi (MON) .
Born 65-year ago , nicknamed “Owoblow “ by Nigerian football fans , the former Shooting Stars’ player was part of the wining squad that won Nigeria’s first Nation Cup trophy in Lagos .
On 19 March, 1980 . In the 9th minutes of the encounter between the Green Eagles and the Atlas of Morroco, he scored the goal that qualified Nigeria to their first ever Africa Nations Cup final in front of the 70,000 capacity National Stadium.
The match ended 1-0 in favour of the Green Eagles .
Looking back at his career that started at Kaduna Rocks in Kaduna to his exploits at the National Team and Shootings Stars with many laurels and recognition across Africa. Felix Owolabi told Jacob Ajom of Vanguard that his gratitude goes to Nigerians for the love over the years.
“ I want to use this opportunity to thank Nigerians for the love they have shown me over the years , I remember the 1980 Nations Cup – they asked Salisu Abubakar during an interview , what he could say about Felix Owolabi , he said , he didn’t know that Nigerians saw in me . He observed that among the players in the team, once we were coming out of the tunnel onto the pitch, the entire stadium would be echoing in unison “ Owo..Owo..Owo, as if Owo was the only person going to play . I appreciate Nigerians, I appreciate everybody. I only hope and pray that Nigerians sports will continue to wax stronger, He concluded on his gratitude to Nigerians.
Felix Owolabi (MON) is now a retiree and farmer that specialize in Animal Husbandry .
