Ovtcharov wins maiden WTT Contender title


Dimitrij Ovtcharov reasserted his position as one of the best Table Tennis player with a 4-1 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yun-Ju to win the maiden edition of the World Tabe Tennis  Contender tournament in Doha on Saturday (6 March).


The 32-year-old won the first three set (11-6, 14-12, 12-10,), except the semifinals and finals, the WTT Contender comprises the best of five games, in the fourth set, the Chinese Taipei’s 19-year-old left-hander Lin Yun-Ju won 11-6 t get a life line.

Quadri Defeated , Legendary Status Intact

In the deciding set for more life lines for the19-year-old or a victory for Ovtcharov, the German won 11—6 to become the first man to win the men’s singles champion of the WTT Contender Series.


In an explosive semi-final, DIMA as the German is popularly called accounted for top seed Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan 4-2 (8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-3, 11-7).

More rallies and drama were witnessed in the quarter-final, as Ovtcharov was repeatedly warned about breaking of COVID-19 protocols but at the end, the German defeated Sweden’s Mattias Falck 3-2 (11-4,12-14, 11-4, 11-13 ,11-7)


It wasn’t an easy feat for Lin Yun-Ju , who is the youngest player to get to the final of the  World Table Tennis  Contender , the southpaw player accounted for France’s Simon Gauzy (11-7, 8-11, 11-3 ,11-8 ,11-9) and Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri  3-1 (8-11, 9-11, 17-15, 9-11) in the semi-final and quarter-final respectively .


Lin Yun-Ju has earlier won Gold in the mixed doubles event with Cheng I-Ching, defeating France’s Emmanuel Lebesson and Yuan Jia Nan 3-2.


The women’s singles final was a Japanese affair with Ito Mima securing Gold over Hayata Hina in a 4-2 victory.
