Nigeria and Africa’s foremost table tennis player, Funke Oshonaike, has described the omission of the names of female table tennis players by the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation from the forth coming Commonwealth games in Australia as unfair.

Few days ago, the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation release names of table tennis players that will represent the country at the 21ST Commonwealth games in Gold coast, Australia without a female player on the list.

Since Table Tennis debut in 2002 in Manchester, Nigeria Female table tennis players has never won a medal .

In a private chat with Mudashiru Shittu , Funke said the list came to her as a shock and disappointment.

When asked the reason for her disappointment, in her words she said.

“Because the girls are not going. It has never happened before. The other female players from other Africa countries are going, so why are they stopping us ”

She also said the lack of medals by the female tennis players at the Commonwealth games shouldn’t stop their inclusion for the games.

” So, does that mean that other countries that hasn’t won the medals shouldn’t go for the games.”

She further reacted to the statement of the National Coach, Coach Nosiru Bello, who said there are no realistic prospects for a medal amongst the female players for part of the reasons why they were excluded from the games.

” It is very wrong for him to say so, how can they improve if they don’t go for competition, what is guaranteed in life? They have made their decisions and I hope it will favour them. To me and the other girls, it is very unfair.’’
