In a letter signed by the President of Badminton Confederation Africa, Michel Bau and addressed to the Obiageli Solaja on 18 April to honor the Olympian as the 2019 African Women in Badminton recipient stated the reasons why she was honored .
Obiageli, who won three gold representing Nigeria at the All African Championship in 1996 was chosen as a recipient for her enormous contributions to the success of the All Africa Championship that was held in Port Harcourt in 2019.
The letter stated clearly that the recipient’s dedication to the tournament was displayed in a high level of professionalism.
“ ……. You were committed your tasks, dedicated to the overall success of the tournament and you displayed a high level of professionalism from the initial planning stage of the tournament, until it’s completion. “
it was also mentioned that she was also chosen for her career achievement as a female badminton player in Nigeria and Africa , she became one of first three female badminton player in Africa to participate in the badminton events at the Olympics .
The awardee will be honored during the BCA Annual General Meeting later this year becoming the second recipient after South Africa’s Gretha Prinsloo , who won the maiden edition .
Obiageli Solaja , a seven-time African Women Championship and 10-time National Champion is also a board member of the Nigeria Badminton Federation .
