World Athletics Unveils Eligibility Criteria for $500,000 Fund for Athletes

The world is experiencing financial hardship due to lockdown caused by the Coronavirus pandemic since December that the virus started in Wuhan, China.

All sporting activities that is a major source of revenue for athletes has been cancelled due to the pandemic and this has caused major financial hardship to sport men and women across the globe.

In this regard, The World Athletics and International Athletics Foundation has provided a US$ 500,000 welfare fund for professional athletes who meets the criteria and application process.

According to the President of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, the governing body faced challenges in ensuring that funds get to the athletes in most need.

“The IAF has allocated a substantial sum to the fund, and we hope to raise more through private donations from friends of our sport, but it has become apparent that the resources must be focused on athletes who are likely to be competing at the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year and are now struggling to pay for basic necessities due to loss of income during the pandemic, ” Coe said.

“We know this is a stressful situation for many athletes and we are trying to provide meaningful assistance to as many as possible as quickly as possible so they can continue to train for the competition season we have now scheduled for August to October, and for next year’s Olympics. ”

According to Olympic champion Hicham El Guerrouj , who is also a member of the working group that initiated the project , said lack of competitions has hit hard financially on the athletes because many rely on prize money to cater for themselves and their families .

All applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be qualified (by meeting the entry standard) for selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games
  • Must have never had an anti-doping rule violation
  • Must be able to demonstrate a justifiable welfare need through significant loss of income in 2020 compared to 2019.
