The President of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation. Engr. Ishaku Tikon has hail the historic performance of Quadri Aruna at the ongoing WTT Star Contender taking place in Doha , Qatar .
Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna has become the first African player to reach the semifinals stage at the WTT Star Contender after an outstanding 3-0 (11-8, 11-8, 11-7) win over China’s Zhou Qihao in the quarterfinals of the Men’s singles in Doha, Qatar .
According to Tikon on behalf of the board members of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation , “ Aruna’s exploits is a remarkable feat that has shaped the career paths of young Nigerian players , who are following in his steps”.
Tikon , who is also on the board of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation further said the NTTF has ensured an enabling environment for more “Aruna Quadri” to emerge from the country .
“ There are several competitions in both the male and female category that are lined up to achieve the target of churning more stars from the country , our young players are already a dominant force in the region “
We also believe that Aruna can defeat South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon to qualify for the final “.
The World number 14 defeated China’s Liu Dingshuo 3-2 in the round of 32 and conquered another Chinese Zhao Zihao 3-0 in the round of 16 of the Men’s Singles with an emphatic win to qualify for the quarterfinals .
Meanwhile in the quarterfinals . Aruna avenge his 2019 semifinal defeat at Hungary Open to ZHOU Qihao when he conquered the Chinese star 3-0 to become the first African player to reach the semifinals stage at the WTT Star Contender.
Aruna’s next opponent is South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon. He will be hoping to avenge his 1-3 loss to the South Korean in the round of 32 at the WTT Contender which took place at the same venue a week ago.
