2021 Aso Table Tennis National Championship: Winning start for Ganiyu Ashimiyu

Silver medallist at the same venue in 2018, losing to Segun Toriola at the 2018 National Sports Festival in Abuja, Ganiyu Ashimiyu won his first match against the seven-time Olympian before losing the remaining three games to the more experienced player.

 

Unseeded, the former Lagos player emerged victorious in his opening group stage match at the 2021 Aso Table Tennis National Championship  on Tuesday 4th April.

 

The NSCDC player won  4-1, losing his first game 6-11 against Oladele representing Ogun state before he ensured that the match was beyond his opponent and within few minutes, he has dismissed Oladele (11-2, 11-5 ,11-6)

 

Bookmakers at EDO 2020 Sports Festival are of the opinion that trend of events at the Sports festival would have a different outcome if the Eko 2012 Bronze medalist had played.

 

Other games at the opening game of the 2021 Aso Table Tennis National Championship saw youngster Usman Okanlawon revenge his 3-0 defeat in Edo with the same margin as he conquered his conqueror 3-0 (11-7, 12-10, 13-11)

Edo 2020 Men’s Singles Champion, Amadi Omeh overpowered Daniel Ubiomo 3-0 (11-6, 11-7, 11-5)

 

The most thrilling of the opening games was in Table Four where self proclaimed “eruku Mushin” Qudus Oladejo of Ogun defeated Fagbamia Akinwale of Ondo 3-2 (9-11, 13-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8)
