The cycling event of the 20th National Sports Festival ended in Benin City on Monday with host Edo and Akwa Ibom states sharing the men and women gold medals between themselves.
In the women category, the rivalry between Ese Ukpeseraye and Tombrapa Grikpa cost Delta and Edo states, which had the best riders of the pack, a placing on the medals podium as both riders worked their elimination from the 23.4km 13 laps race.
Following their elimination, Mary Sunday representing Akwa Ibom state shrugged off the stiff challenge from Tawakalit Yekeen of Oyo to pick the gold in a time of 44mins, 41.06 secs while Tawakalit got the silver with a time of 44mins, 42.10secs.
Jessica Gambo from Kaduna state placed third in a time of 44mins, 43.12secs to take the bronze medal.
The men’s 57.6km race which turned out to be the most exciting saw Edo, Borno and Oyo states picking the gold, silver and bronze medals in that order.
Temple Bethel of Edo finished in a time of 1hr, 55mins, 25.78secs to win the gold, Emmanuel Gabriel of Borno placed second with a time of 1hr, 55mins,30.01secs for the silver while Oyo rider, Sodiq Ajibade took the bronze with a time of 1hr, 57mins and 50.10secs.
