Lagos Athletes insist on Abuja 2018 awards to participate in Edo 2020


Lagos state Athletes has expressed their dissatisfaction to the Lagos State Sport Commission over the non-payment of their entitlements and rewards for their exploits at the last edition of the National Sport Festival in Abuja.

Lagos, who came fourth, amassed a total 146 medals, which includes 36 gold, 37 silver and 73 bronze is yet to rewards their athletes for their extra-ordinary performances.

In preparation for the Edo 2020, On Wednesday 3, a meeting between the Lagos state Sport Commission and the athletes took place at the Molade Okoya Indoor Sport Hall at the Telsim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

It was gathered that the meeting, which was scheduled for 11am didn’t commence until 1pm, and according to our correspondent, the cardinal points of the gathering includes the promise of instant award of ₦35,000, ₦ 25,000 and ₦15,000 for Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalists respectively for Edo 2020.

During the interactive session, the issue of the non-payment of the Abuja 2018 awards came to the front burner, the Director General responded by pleading that the athletes should exercise more patient stating that the commission is still in talks with the Lagos State Sport Commission.


In a sharp contrast, the athletes stood firmly that all deliberations, which includes the non-payments of the awards of the Abuja 2018 and the outstanding grants since last year needs to be resolved before they represent the state.


With persuasion from the Director-General of the Commission, AbdulGafar Oluwatoyin Bolowotan and the Chairman of the Commission, Sola Aiyepeku, the athletes headed by the Captain, Lagos State Athletes Association, Paralympian Ahmed Koleosho , said until the awards of the last Edition is paid the athletes won’t represent the state in Edo 2020.

It was also revealed that some athletes who won medal for the state in Abuja 2018 will be represent other states .

After an excruciating meeting, the Commission said both the open and closed camp for Edo 2020 will be for 10 days starting from the 9th of March.
