The Lagos state sports commission with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria is organizing a one-day Athletics Meet scheduled to take place on June 24, Thursday, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium .
Twenty-four states across the federation and some clubs have confirmed entry for the one-day meet, which is also serving as another qualifying window for the Tokyo Olympics as well as a preparatory event for athletes that have already qualified for the sporting showpiece.
The list of events to be competed for at the Lagos Open Athletics Championships includes the 5,000 meters, 400 meters hurdles, 100 meters, 800 meters, 400 meters, and 100 meters.
“ The Athletics Meet is a strategy to revive Athletics in Lagos and the southwest region” said Sola Aiyepeku, who is the Chairman of Lagos state sports commission.
“ the Athletics Meet is a strategy to revive Athletics in Lagos and the southwest region , the meet also serves as another opportunity for the athletes who didn’t have a chance to qualify at the Nigeria National Olympics trials .”
Other events at the Championships includes the long jump, High jump, Triple jump, Shot put as well as 4×100 secondary schools relay and 4×100 secondary schools relay, while there would also be top-quality action across the relay events including the 4×100 meters open, 4×100 meters open and 4×400 meters mixed relay.
Nigeria men’s 4x400m , 4×100 and the women’s 4×400 , who failed to qualify for the Olympics at the Nigerian Olympic trials at Yaba College of Technology have anther opportunity t make it to the Olympics through the Lagos Open Athletics Championship .
