Six months after the heroic performance of Nigeria athletes at the 2021 World Athletics U-20 World Championship in Nairobi Kenya, Federal ministry of youths and Sports is yet to fulfill the promise of cash awards of $5000 for Gold, $3000 for Silver and $2000 for Bronze medals, the sport minister, Sunday Dare made in August.
In a publication by 234sportsng.com , the SA to minister of youth and Sports, Toyin Ibitoye confirmed the delay, and that the money would have been paid before now but some people with the knowledge of how the American Collegiate System work advised the Ministry against paying students who are under scholarship since they can’t receive cash from other sources while they are on scholarship.
In a related development, Special Adviser to the minister of Youths and Sports Developmet, Mary Onyali, who is a former athlete has advised the affected athletes to be patient that the ministry will fulfil the promise made.
“The promise made to them is still alive. I have spoken to some of them they should just be patient’’.
The athletes includes Favour Ofili, Imaobong Uko, Opeyemi Oke, Ella Onjuvwevwo, Johnson Nnamani, Bamidele Ajayi. Praise Ofoku, Udodi Onwuzurike, Anita Traviore.
Team Nigeria finished third on the overall medals table with a total four gold and three bronze medals, Kenya won the championship while Finland came second.
