World Table Tennis: Olajide makes history

Africa games Gold medalist and winner of multiple honours , Omotayo Olajide , has become the first African to win a match in the newly introduced World Table Tennis Event structure at the WTT Contender series .

 

Olajide defeated Kazakhstan’s Alan Kurmangaliyev 3-1 in the first round of the preliminary round of the WTT Contender Series taking place in Doha.

World Table Tennis has taken the place of International Table Tennis Federation World Tour and World Tour Platinum events in the calendar of International Table Tennis Federation.

 

Only two major events would not take place under the banner of World Table Tennis – the World Championships (including World Team Championships) and Olympic Games.

 

Olajide would face Sweden’s Anton Kallberg in the second round of the preliminary round tomorrow (Monday)

 

The WTT middle East Hub taking place at the Lusail Sports Arena in Doha, Qatar, features two tiers of the new WTT event structure, with players competing in a WTT Contender event before moving on to a WTT Star Contender event the following week
